To all who post here...
The phone numbers 214-969-5489 and 415-656-1073 do not refer to any one single pay phone in any one single location. They are most likely outbound trunk numbers of the long distance companies used by the individual pay phones.

When someone makes a coin paid long distance call from most COCOT pay phones, the pay phone does NOT dial the destination number directly. Instead it dials a toll-free number, listens for a 2nd dialtone, then dials the destination number. By doing this, the company that operates the pay phone will get cheaper long distance rates, but a major side effect of dialing calls this way is that the number of the pay phone will NOT be sent as the Caller ID. Instead callers will receive a 'generic' number that often can not be called back.

Please accept the fact that these numbers (214-969-5489, 415-656-1073, etc.) only indicate a call from some pay phone somewhere, not a specific pay phone location.

I got a missed call on my home phone caller ID as "Pay Phone" No. 713-718-1037 today. But when I called that number the automated voice mail came on and said that "Sorry, it is not a working no. Please consult your directory". How can it be possible for caller ID to show a not working no. Can someone please help. This is a greater Houston, TX area phone no.Thanks a lot......

After Extensive Research I have determined that 305 is the defualt area code for Miami-Dade County and the part of Monroe County that is in the Keys. Both of these locations are in Florida. Hope this helps.

In a past post I mis-identified area code two-one-two (212) as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is actually the area code for New York City, New York. Philadelphia primarily uses area code two-one-five (215).

Here’s the problem. Twice now my girlfriend said she called me from a payphone after work. Both times when I dialed *69 it give me the same phone number. I then did a reverse look up of this phone number on 411locate.com. The website tells me that the phone number belongs to an apartment in Ocean Beach. This morning I asked my girlfriend about this and she insists that she called me from a payphone and not from someone’s apartment. I want to believe my girlfriend is telling me the truth. When I dial the number myself, I get a fax machine sound. So my question is: Can *69 be wrong or can a reverse look up of a phone number be wrong?

At last I can post my long awaited information concerning the inventor of the pay phone! William Gray was not the inventor of the pay phone. My great-grandfather Roy Noble was. Because he did not get a patent for his invention someone else did. When I was a child my grandmother (Roy's daughter) told me this. Roy worked for the phone company in Chicago and came up with this invention which was stolen from him because he failed to get a patent for his invention. This other person made loads of money that did not belong to him.

Yes, you can call toll-free numbers from pay phones without putting any money in. Since the owner of the toll-free number gets charged a 28 cent service fee for the call, some toll-free numbers may be blocked from pay phones.

I received a telephone call from 251-947-8966 today and the person was very rude and now is calling me back every ten minutes. I want to figure out who called me so I can report them to the FCC and see if my phone company will block these harrassing calls.

I looked the number up on http://www.everycall.us but I didn't get much help other than people complaining of similar behavior. Anyhow here know of any?

If someone lift the receiver while you're connected to the payphone's modem, you'll be connected. Surprisingly I got connected repeatedly to the guy you'll on the webcam 2 or 3 times. I guess he was looking for a working (ready to call) payphone.
